Baked Oatmeal – this delicious breakfast is made with nutritious oats, sweetened with maple syrup and flavored with cinnamon and vanilla. It’s a hearty, delicious way to start the day!

Easy Amish Baked Oatmeal

The perfect breakfast to serve any day of the year! You can’t go wrong with this comforting, homestyle baked oatmeal. When you serve it freshly baked no one will be able to resist! Even picky eaters will love it.

It’s an easy breakfast recipe your whole family can agree on. It’s one of my favorite ways to make oatmeal!

Baked oatmeal is such a unique type of oatmeal, with a texture and taste unlike any of the microwave, stovetop, slow cooker, Instant Pot or overnight versions you’ve tried. So finally an oatmeal that has some structure to it!

It’s not just some baby food mush that slides off your spoon (because I know some people hate that mushy texture). This stuff holds it shape!

If you’d like you can prep this the night before and pop it in the oven the next morning. Or you can make it in advance and reheat individual portions over the next few days! Can’t beat a make ahead breakfast (especially if you aren’t a morning person like me).

Amish Baked Oatmeal Ingredients:

For this healthy baked oatmeal recipe, you’ll need:

  • Eggs– this helps the mixture bind and stick together so it can be cut into squares.
  • Maple syrup or light brown sugar – you can adjust the amount to taste, I’d recommend using at least 1/4 cup and no more than 3/4 cup.
  • Baking powder – preferably use aluminum free baking powder. It doesn’t have that strange aftertaste.
  • Cinnamon – in addition to cinnamon you can add other warm spices like nutmeg, ginger and cloves for extra flavor.
  • Vanilla extract – use real vanilla extract for best flavor.
  • Salt – this keeps it from tasting flat.
  • Milk – I like to use whole or 2% milk here.
  • Butter – salted or unsalted butter will work here.
  • Rolled Oats – rolled old fashioned or quick oats can be used here.

Can I Use Steel Cut Oats?

No, rolled oats or quick oats are the only types of oats that will work in this recipe.

Can I Use Non-Dairy Milk?

Yes another non-dairy milk will be fine here such as almond milk, oat milk, coconut milk, or rice milk.

How to Make it into Muffins:

Add 1/2 cup applesauce to the liquid mixture (in addition to ingredient listed). Divide oatmeal mixture among 12 greased or paper lined muffin cups. Bake 20 – 25 minutes.

I tried this recipe with great expectations; however, it turned out mush on the bottom. Any idea as to why? It tasted delicious but I could not get past the mushiness on the bottom of all of my squares.

Sorry that happened, did you refrigerate before baking possibly? You could try baking in a hotter oven and maybe for a bit longer.

      • Debra Guerra

        No, I didn’t refrigerate it.

How much of a higher temperature and how much more time would you suggest?

I would increase temp by 25 degrees, then check at original time and add more if needed, up to 5 minutes.

Great and Easy Recipe – we make this regularly during the cooler months. It is a requested favorite for family trips. I add fruit and nuts to mixture before baking. It has never failed me even with those picky eaters. I vary the sugar based on who is eating and what I have in the pantry. I also always use 1 to 2 percent milk.

My family loves this simple and delicious recipe! We had it (again) on Christmas morning and I highly recommend trying it with a little (nonalcoholic) eggnog over the top. Delicious!

I’m planning to make this for breakfast. Can I stir in chocolate chips at the end before baking or should I just use them as a topping?

You should be able to do either/ or.

  • Jenn

I have made this so many times and it’s been a big hit with my whole family. We usually top it with yogurt and fruit, it’s great!

  • TS

I substituted the syrup and sugar with part sugar free syrup and part stevia. That was really good!

Defiantly a 5 star recipe. My only question is what is an approximate weight per serving?

    • Jaclyn

Baked Oatmeal Recipe - Cooking Classy (16)

I’m happy to hear you like it Karen! Unfortunately I don’t have the weight per serving but I’ll try to remember next time I make it. It would be 1/8th of the final yield.

      • Ember

This is fantastic. I’ve made it Several times as a super easy breakfast meal prep. Once, I didn’t have milk and replaced it with a thin plain yogurt. So good.. I keep it at 1/4 C. sweetener and put slices of two bananas over the top and press them into the batter slightly and sprinkle a generous amount of cinnamon on top before baking. Before reheating a slice in the morning, I pour a small amount of cream in the bowl and drizzle peanut butter on top. I have this with scrambled eggs and coffee and it keeps me full and satisfied until time for a late lunch or early dinner. Thank you SO much for this incredible recipe 😍
(I’m going to try adding cocoa powder to half the recipe next time, and split the batter between two loaf pans. One cinnamon banana, one chocolate.)

Delicious! Great texture. I sub coconut oil for butter and add flax seeds, chia seeds, and organic raisins. Perfect every time!

FAQs

Are baked oats as healthy as oatmeal? ›

"Baked oats are similar to standard oats," says Rachel Fine, RRD and owner of To The Pointe Nutrition. Fine points out that because oats are a naturally gluten-free whole grain, they have plenty of health benefits that won't bake-off. Oats are a "fabulous source of carbohydrates and soluble fiber," says Fine.

Why are my baked oats mushy? ›

If you don't allow your oats to cook long enough, they may have a mushy texture. Even if the top looks cooked, be sure that it has cooked all the way through. I recommend about a 30 minute bake time for an individual serving. You also want to be sure you didn't add too much liquid.

Old fashioned oats provide a chewy, nutty texture and flavor to oatmeal cookies. They are thicker and heartier than quick oats (instant oats).
