Spinach dip has always been a favorite of mine, so when I went vegan about 20 years ago, this was one of the first things that I tried to veganize! Luckily it's pretty easy to swap out a few ingredients to make it vegan.

I served this at my kid's birthday parties, neighborhood picnics, and family get-togethers for years and no one ever guesses that it's vegan!

🧾 Ingredients and substitutions

  • Frozen Spinach - you will use a whole 16 oz bag of spinach. Use frozen, not fresh, the frozen has the right texture to work well in the dip.
  • Vegan Mayo - for creaminess. Any brand of vegan mayo will work or you can easily make your own with my vegan mayo recipe!
  • Vegan Sour Cream - for creaminess. You can use a store-bought sour cream vegansour cream recipe to make your own.
  • Water Chestnuts - for added crunch. You can leave them out, but I highly recommend them. I accidentally forgot to add them once and the dip was just not nearly as good. (It's a rich and creamy dip that needs that crunch to balance it out). Note: I use the canned whole water chestnuts and dice them up myself. For some reason, the pre-diced ones have a funny taste to me.
  • Dry Soup Mix - for flavor. Knorr vegetable soup mix is the classic one to use with this recipe, but you can use any vegan soup mix that comes in an envelope. Most of the onion soup mixes that they sell in the envelopes are vegan. Or, if you don't want to use one of these mixes, you can make your own with salt, garlic powder, dehydrated onions, and a splash of soy sauce or Tamari.

🥄 How to make vegan spinach dip

Step 1 - Thaw the frozen spinach. (Leave at room temperature for a few hours or put on defrost in the microwave for about 5 minutes).

Step 2 - Put the frozen spinach in a colander and press it allowing all the excess liquid to drain off of it.

Step 3 - Dice the water chestnuts into small pieces.

Step 4 - Mix the mayo, sour cream, and soup mix in a large bowl.

Step 5 - Add the water chestnuts and thawed drained spinach.

Step 6 - Stir everything together until well combined.

Step 7 - Refrigerate until ready to serve. (It tastes best if it sits for a few hours in the fridge before serving)

Step 8 - Serve with pretzels, pita chips, and fresh vegetables or in a pumpernickel bread bowl.

Note: This makes a lot of dips. You could cut the recipe in half, but then you would have half bags and open containers. It's easiest to make the whole batch and freeze what you don't use.

I usually make it for holidays and get-togethers where there are a lot of people to help eat it. It's also great as a sandwich spread or in a veggie wrap if you have leftovers.

🌟 How to make spinach artichoke dip

Mix in a jar of marinated artichoke hearts that you have chopped into small pieces. Serve hot or cold. To serve hot, but in a baking dish top with vegan mozzarella cheese and bake at 350°F for 25 minutes until bubbly.

🍞 Is spinach dip gluten-free?

All of the ingredients in this dip are gluten-free if you use a gluten-free soup mix. Many brands of soup mixes are gluten-free, but be sure to check the label yourself. You can also use my homemade method and be sure to use tamari or Bragg's Liquid Aminos instead of soy sauce.

🧂 How to make lower sodium spinach dip

You can omit the soup mix and use your choice of salt and spices to control the sodium and avoid the MSG in dry soup mixes.

These are the spices I use when I make it myself:

  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp dried parsley
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp dehydrated onions or onion powder
  • 1 tsp soy sauce or tamari or Bragg's Liquid Aminos

How important are the water chestnut to this recipe? I really don’t care for them.

You can leave them out. They mostly just provide a little texture to the dip. You could use chopped celery instead if you want or leave it out.

I was going to make vegan spinach dip this way and turns out the Knorr mix has lactose in it which is not vegan. Just wanted to let you know. What's in the ingredients matters to vegans.

Where do you live, Janice? Where I live in the United States, the Knorr vegetable soup mix that comes in an envelope does not contain lactose. I did some research and found that other flavors contain lactose and so does a version that comes in a large tub. (I think that one is sold in the UK.) The envelope of the vegetable soup mix that I buy does not contain any milk products. I've been vegan for almost 22 years and I only create vegan recipes, but it's always good to double-check since manufactures change ingredients and make their products different in other countries.

Mmm this spinach dip looks so yummy, I can't stand it. Practically drooling!
I'm really happy I came across your blog! I made several attempts to become vegan, but I didn't manage to do it in the end. Today I'm in the process of giving up animal products, refined products, and living a cruelty-free lifestyle. But it's not easy, no matter what they say. So I badly need vegan blogs with delicious vegan recipes.
I adore spinach, by the way. This type of greens is the best for me, and I believe it makes each food healthy (and delicious, of course). That's because it contains a lot of vitamins, fiber, and iron. Unfortunately, my boys don't like greens and veggies so much, so I always try to find some tricks to make them eat at least a small amount of them. In addition, they're obsessed with dairy, especially with cheese! I hope, they won't mention anything ahaha 🙂 I'm sure this dish is a real catch for our family.
Thank you for sharing this recipe and for your work in general, Monica! I'd like to make it after New Year's Eve, when everybody is full of festive dishes, and surprise my lil picky eaters! 🙂

    Happy New Year!

I'm glad you found my blog too Anna! I hope your boys like the dip. My boys are not huge spinach fans in other dishes but love it in this dip. My oldest started calling it diaper dip years ago for some odd reason. Now when I make it my boys cheer for "diaper dip!" Good luck with eating vegan. Let me know if there are any recipes you would like to see. 🙂

Wow! This tasted just like regular spinach dip that I used to make. I served it to my extended family at my daughter's birthday party yesterday and everyone loved it! (I used your mayo recipe, but I had a container of Tofutti brand vegan sour cream already so I used that). This is one of the best things that I have found to serve to non-vegans! Thanks!
