Darlington Farmers Auction Mart held their monthly sale of rearing calves in conjunction with their weekly sale of cast cattle, store and breeding stock on Monday 24th June 2024. Forward were 316 cattle and 25 pigs.

Rearing Calves – The calf trade remains firm to see them average £412.04 with a real premium remaining on the lively sorts which have had their bellies chock full of colostrum. Top price of the day went to a very strong British Blue bull calf from R W Raper & Sons, High Mulberry when he sold for £660, behind him at £590 followed another British Blue bull, this one from an excellent run of young calves produced by Deerness Valley Dairy, Tow Law. The Deerness Valley herd followed again at £555 just in front of a great run of British Blue calves from regular supporters Wilkinson & Son, Carrsides Farm who sold both bulls and heifers to a top of £550. More calves are needed for the next monthly sale which will be held on 29th July 2024.

Cast Cattle – The cow trade continues in terrific form as the super summer of sport keeps the barbeques burning brightly. This week’s offering averaged 187ppk and £1205 per head. Some sensational sorts up at the top end this week saw a marvellous nine reach beyond £1700 and no less than twenty-eight sell over 200ppk. Pick of the pack was a delightful 783kg Limousin OTM heifer from J E Jordon & Son, The Brocks, Longhirst when she sold for 278ppk and £2176. Other impressive returns went to a Hereford OTM from A P Taylor, Ox Close at 256ppk and at the same price per kilo and amounting to £2099 came an excellent 8-year-old Limousin cow from M Barker Farms, Ellerton Abbey. Of the twenty dairy cows included this week it was a superb nine-year-old Montbeliarde from A Willey, Broomfield Farm, Chopwell out in front when she sold for 198ppk and £1576, a quartet of Holstein Friesian OTM heifers, three from Deerness Valley Dairy and the other from J T Forster & Son, Killerby, also impressed selling between 206ppk and 228ppk.

Store & Breeding Cattle – A reduced show as folk make hay whilst the sun shines, trade remains on point with those in attendance keen to buy leaving plenty of life in the prices for all shapes and sizes. Top of the day at £1595 was an excellent 18-month-old Limousin steer from G S Bainbridge, Ketton Lodge; behind him came some superb 2-year-old Longhorn steers from A Willey, Broomfield Farm selling one at £1545 and three more at £1530. The Broomfield Farm pen also took the accolade of top priced heifer with a well grown Limousin reaching £1455 whilst the top young bulls were a stretchy pair of British Blue’s from Wilkinson & Son, Carrsides Farm at £1195.

Store Pigs – An astounding twenty-five swine on offer this week, that’s a total of fifty pig’s ears which is almost makes as much of a pig’s ear of things as the Scotland football team managed in Stuttgart last night.
