Y’all. I’m not sure if there’s ever been more excitement about a recipe I’ve shared on my blog before! I gave a little sneak peek of these Sausage Cheddar Pinwheels on Instagram stories this past weekend and have gotten so many messages asking when I was going to post the recipe. So without further ado…

Sausage Cheddar Pinwheels (2)

Sausage Cheddar Pinwheels! This is one of my family’s favorite recipes. My mom has made them for Christmas morning, tailgates, parties, brunches for as long as I can remember. They are addictive and always a crowd pleaser. The best part is you can prep them ahead of time and store in the freezer so you have something to pull out when you need a snack for a crowd. We typically make them for breakfast, but they’re a great appetizer too. The recipe is so easy it only has three ingredients! Check it out below:

Sausage Cheddar Pinwheels

Ingredients

  • 1 lb sausage
  • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 2 cans crescent roll dough (try and find the crescent roll sheets to make things easier!)

Directions

  1. Add sausage and cheddar cheese to a bowl and use your hands to thoroughly combine.
  2. Roll out one can of crescent rolls and pinch seams to make one rectangular sheet of dough. Gently push edges and corners to expand the dough without tearing or making too thin.
  3. Spread half of the sausage mixture evenly to cover the crescent roll dough.
  4. From the long side, roll dough to form a log and pinch seam so none of the sausage mixture falls out.
  5. Repeat with remaining can of crescent rolls and sausage mixture to form a second log.
  6. Wrap dough logs in foil and freeze for at least two hours or up to a month*.
  7. When you are ready to serve, preheat oven to 375 and remove dough logs from freezer.
  8. If you’ve frozen overnight or longer, let thaw for about 30-45 minutes. You want them to still be firm but not completely frozen.
  9. Slice pinwheels about 1/3 in thick and place on a greased or silicon mat-lined baked sheet. They slide off the silicon mat much easier.
  10. Bake for 15 minutes until golden brown.

*You can bake directly without freezing them, it’s just a little harder to slice the pinwheels, so I recommend throwing them in the freezer for anytime you can, even just 20 minutes!

These look so good!! I pinned these so I can try them. We finally got grocery pick up at our local Kroger a few weeks ago and I love it! I feel like a queen getting groceries now. 🤣

Is the sausage precooked? If not, will it safely cook in the short time the crescent rolls are browned and ready?

      Hi Carol,

Yes, you use raw sausage and it cooks in that time! Since the pinwheels are pretty thin, they cook through fast. Hope you enjoy!
