Netmums Editorial

Take a walk down memory lane and relive your childhood with all the delicious (but not overly healthy!) foods you once ate.

1. Turkey Twizzlers

30 foods that will remind you of your childhood - Netmums (1)

1/30

They were a lunch room favourite at schools back in the ‘90s. But then chef Jamie Oliver criticised them on his TV series Jamie’s School Dinners. Eventually, the TV chef moved to get them banned from the school lunch menu and succeeded. Then, in 2005 they were discontinued.

2. Tubby Custard and Tubby Toast

30 foods that will remind you of your childhood - Netmums (2)

2/30

The Teletubbies were enormous in the ‘90s. Everyone wanted a piece of Tubby action, with some so obsessed they wanted to eat like them, too – which is when Tubby Custard and Tubby Toast was brought out as an actual thing! Ahhh good times.

3. The McHot Dog

30 foods that will remind you of your childhood - Netmums (3)

3/30

McDonalds had a hot dog on its menu in the late 1990s and again, as a seasonal item in 2002. However, if you want to sample this now, you’d have to travel to Japan, where they're currently available.

4. Sprinkl'ins Yoghurt

30 foods that will remind you of your childhood - Netmums (4)

4/30

Yoghurts with sprinkles in, what else would you want in life? The biggest mystery is, why they were ever discontinued.

5. Butter flavoured and Citrus Sharp Polos

30 foods that will remind you of your childhood - Netmums (5)

5/30

Back in the ‘90s, Polo flavours were fun. Now you’ve just got plain old mint.

6. Taz Bars

30 foods that will remind you of your childhood - Netmums (6)

6/30

They were like a Freddo bar but with caramel inside, and with the shape of Looney Tunes character the Tasmanian Devil on it. You can now get caramel Feddos, but they just aren't the same.

7. Toffo's

30 foods that will remind you of your childhood - Netmums (7)

7/30

These buttery bad boys were awesome. They were chewy and came in so many different flavours.

8. Cadbury Dream

30 foods that will remind you of your childhood - Netmums (8)

8/30

This was just the best bar of white chocolate, ever. It’s no longer available in the UK, but if you’re ever holidaying in Australia, New Zealand or South Africa, you could pick one up. They also did the chocolate in an egg version, too.

9. Extra Mint Strips

30 foods that will remind you of your childhood - Netmums (9)

9/30

No one actually liked the way these felt or tasted, as they were literally a strip of mint that melted on your tongue, but the novelty was fun!

10. Cartoonies

30 foods that will remind you of your childhood - Netmums (10)

10/30

These chocolate-filled biscuits are so sorely missed, there's even been a Facebook page set up to get them brought back.

11. Campino Sweets

30 foods that will remind you of your childhood - Netmums (11)

11/30

No-one actually knew the name of these because the text was just impossible to read as a kid. But if you see the packaging, you will automatically taste the strawberry goodness.

12. Bic & M&Ms

30 foods that will remind you of your childhood - Netmums (12)

12/30

These were long biscuits with a chocolate filling and topped with M&Ms and they were utterly delicious.

13. Polo supermint

30 foods that will remind you of your childhood - Netmums (13)

13/30

The Polo super mint was a giant plastic Polo-shaped container filled with mini Polos – such fun!

14. Cadbury's Snaps

30 foods that will remind you of your childhood - Netmums (14)

14/30

These Pringle-shaped biscuits were all the rage when they first came in. But, they started to disappear off the shelves in 2010.

15. Mingles

30 foods that will remind you of your childhood - Netmums (15)

15/30

Minty chocolates that came in a box, what more could you want? These bad boys were discontinued in 2009 when the factory that made them in Winchester shut down.

16. Barbie-shaped pasta

30 foods that will remind you of your childhood - Netmums (16)

16/30

Heinz still do the shaped pasta range but they no longer do the Barbie-shaped version.

17. Mars Delight

30 foods that will remind you of your childhood - Netmums (17)

17/30

These bars have been so sorely missed that a petition was created in 2016 to bring them back.

18. Dennis The Menace and Tom And Jerry cupcake mix

30 foods that will remind you of your childhood - Netmums (18)

18/30

Many Saturdays were spent round friends' houses making these cupcakes. Although, not much of the mix actually ended up in the cake cases because it tasted so good!

19. He-Man jelly sweets

30 foods that will remind you of your childhood - Netmums (19)

19/30

If you close your eyes now, you'll remember how He-Mans felt as you pulled them out of the plastic packaging, and how they smelt and tasted as you tucked in!

20. Lunchables Pizza

30 foods that will remind you of your childhood - Netmums (20)

20/30

Lunchtimes were fun back in the '90s, as half of it was spent building your food. Although normal Lunchables are still around, they no longer have the pizza ones, which were the best by far.

21. Heinz Baked Bean Pizza

30 foods that will remind you of your childhood - Netmums (21)

21/30

Beans and cheese go so perfectly together it seemed to make sense to create a pizza out of the popular combo.

22. Beef And Tomato Pot Noodle

30 foods that will remind you of your childhood - Netmums (22)

22/30

Pot Noodles are still around, and this particular flavour was one of the most popular. But, now they just don't taste the same.

23. Crispy Pancakes

30 foods that will remind you of your childhood - Netmums (23)

23/30

These were so tasty. Although, we're not entirely sure why they were called pancakes because they looked nothing like them!

24. Microchips from McCain

30 foods that will remind you of your childhood - Netmums (24)

24/30

Just the pure novelty of making chips in the microwave made these appealing, which was just as well really, because we don't remember them tasting that great.

25. Chicago Town Deep Dish Pizzas

30 foods that will remind you of your childhood - Netmums (25)

25/30

These were another microwaveable wonder. They were used to solve all issues throughout our childhood: hungry? Have a Chicago Town pizza. Bored? Have a Chicago Town pizza. Grounded? Have a Chicago Town pizza. If you were having one of these WITH McCain's Micro Chips and you were in frozen, microwavable food heaven.

26. Hubba Bubba Bubble Tape

30 foods that will remind you of your childhood - Netmums (26)

26/30

If you weren't armed with one of these at the school disco you weren't part of the cool kids clique. Bubble Tape was a must-have accessory, toy, and eventually, sweet that would keep you occupied for hours.

27. Panda Pops

30 foods that will remind you of your childhood - Netmums (27)

27/30

These were the ultimate drink to wash your pick 'n' mix down with. The small sized bottles were so handy and the flavours tasted so good. However, we'll never be able to relive our childhood with Panda Pops, because they were scrapped in 2012 - sad times!

28. Billy Bear ham

30 foods that will remind you of your childhood - Netmums (28)

28/30

Lunchtimes with Billy were always fun, however you ate it - in a sandwich or picking the different coloured parts of the ham out and scoffing it down - it always brought joy. It reminds us of picnics, school lunchtimes and summer holidays. It did, however, have a worryingly low percentage of actual pork in it - but whatever.

29. Sunny Delight

30 foods that will remind you of your childhood - Netmums (29)

29/30

This was a go-to drink back in the '90s, everyone loved a glass of Sunny D. But, people started to go off the beverage when it was reported that a girl turned orange after drinking it. It was reinvented in 2009, but, like many products that have had to take another look at their ingredients, it doesn't have the same appeal anymore.

30. Iced Gems

30 foods that will remind you of your childhood - Netmums (30)

30/30

These were a must-have in your lunchbox. The different coloured ones all tasted slightly different and the yellows would always be left over. However, the best ones were the Chocolate Iced Gems.

And, if all this food talk has left you craving all your favourite childhood snacks, we’ve found this perfect treat hamper to satisfy your sweet tooth. It’s available here at Amazon for £17.95.

Parents are urged to update their passports – before the passport price increase

Family holidays can end up costing a small fortune – from hotels, flights, hire cars… the list goes on.

Then there’s the things we don’t always initially think about – school fines for term time holidays for some parents, new holiday clothes, all the snacks and various activities, to name a few.

And now parents could face another cost if they don’t act fast, as there’s a passport price increase coming in April, which could impact family holidays.

  • What are ‘reborn babies’ and why are some mums spending £20k on them?
  • 4 new laws you need to know about if you’re pregnant or have children
  • Pupils face ‘postcode lottery’ with quality of school meals, says campaigner

‘The government will introduce new passport fees’

Announcing the passport price increase, the Home Office said: ‘The government will introduce new passport fees for all applications on 11 April 2024.’

The statement explained that the government do not make a profit from passports and new fees will pay for manufacturing the passport and processing applications.

Travellers are urged to apply for a passport before 11 April to avoid the price hike.

How much will passport costs increase to?

The passport price increase will see passports increase by 8%.

This will see cost of an online application rise from £82.50 for adults to £88.50 and £53.50 for children rise to £57.50.

Other costs will also increase, with the new price points sitting as follows:

  • a standard postal application will increase to £100.00 for adults, from £93 and £69.00 for children, up from £64
  • While a standard online application when applying from overseas will rise to £101.00 for adults and £65.50 for children
  • a standard paper application when applying from overseas will increase to £112.50 for adults and £77.00 for children

When will the passport price increase be introduced?

The changes are set to come in from 11 April 2024.

How do I apply for a passport?

You can apply for a new passport or renew an old one on the government website here, before the passport price increase.

Passports are usually issued within three weeks but the government advises applying or renewing as early as possible so it comes in time for any summer holidays.

You can also apply for a fast-track passport to come within a week or book an appointment at your local passport office if you need one within a day.

Shoppers can trial the supermarket’s new spring summer wine range in exchange for honest reviews

It might sound too good to be true but Aldi is recruiting shoppers to try its wine – for free.

The budget supermarket is known for selling quality wine at bargain prices, with a number of its tipples gaining gold, silver and bronze medals at prestigious wine awards.

And now the retailer is looking for shoppers to flex their wine-tasting muscles and let others know what they really think of its latest tipples.

  • You risk losing Child Benefit if you don’t report these changes

  • Tesco £4 Sol de Janeiro Bum Bum Cream dupe smells ‘divine’

The supermarket has relaunched its Wine Club and is asking people to apply to trial its new spring summer range, which launches in store on 18 March.

Successful applicants will get three bottles from the range to test and review over an eight-week period.

All they need to do in exchange is post an honest review of the wine on their social media channels using the hashtag #AldiWineClub.

The downside? Only 30 people will be chosen – but you’ve got to be in it to win it, right? Here’s how to apply…

Looking for some wine tasting tips?

If you want to get practicing your wine tasting at home, Aldi’s ‘Mistress of Wine’ Sam Cap*rn has the following tips, based on the five S’s.

1. See: ‘The colour will give an indication of the style of wine says Sam. ‘A deep red will suggest youth and a full-bodied wine, while a pale colour will propose it is lighter and juicier.’

2. Swirl: ‘Pour a small measure and swirl the glass anti-clockwise,’ Sam advises. ‘Swirling ensures a more intense aroma, as it releases what are called “volatile” aromatics.’

3. Sniff: ‘You don’t really taste wine, you smell wine – so this stage is important,’ says Sam. ‘Take short, sharp sniffs rather than breathing in deeply for a long time.’

4. Sip: According to Sam, this is where the magic happens! ‘The aromas in your mouth go up your nose and the wine onto your taste buds, allowing you to appreciate the delicious flavours in the glass.’

5. Savour: This tip is probably our favourite. ‘Now relax, savour those deep flavours that are developing in your mouth and enjoy!’

In a brave video message – released on Friday evening – Catherine, The Princess of Wales spoke of how the diagnosis has come as a ‘huge shock, but told fans: ‘I am well and getting stronger every day.’

The 42 year old said Prince William has been at her side and said she has told her three children, Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, 8 and Prince Louis, 5 and needed time to come to terms with the news before she told the world.

  • Families struggling with bills to get £200 Cost of Living payment
  • Low-income families to get £100 supermarket vouchers to spend in Asda and Tesco
  • Thousands of households to get more free cost of living help

‘Early stages of treatment’

Kate said she is now undergoing preventative chemotherapy and is in the early stages of treatment.

She told how she underwent surgery thinking her condition was non-cancerous, however, despite the surgery being successful, test after the operation found cancer had been present.

Kensington Palace is not revealing which type of cancer Kate has. The news comes as a huge shock to the royal family with King Charles and the future queen now both fighting cancer at the same time.

Kate’s statement in full

Wearing a blue and white striped jumper with blue trousers and sitting on a garden bench Kate said: ‘I wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you, personally, for all the wonderful messages of support and for your understanding whilst I have been recovering from surgery.

‘It has been an incredibly tough couple of months for our entire family, but I’ve had a fantastic medical team who have taken great care of me, for which I am so grateful.

‘In January, I underwent major abdominal surgery in London and at the time, it was thought that my condition was non-cancerous. The surgery was successful.

‘However, tests after the operation found cancer had been present.

‘My medical team therefore advised that I should undergo a course of preventative chemotherapy and I am now in the early stages of that treatment.

‘This of course came as a huge shock, and William and I have been doing everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of our young family.

‘We hope that you will understand that, as a family, we now need some time, space and privacy while I complete my treatment. My work has always brought me a deep sense of joy and I look forward to being back when I am able, but for now I must focus on making a full recovery.

‘At this time, I am also thinking of all those whose lives have been affected by cancer. For everyone facing this disease, in whatever form, please do not lose faith or hope. You are not alone.’

The video was filmed at Windsor on Wednesday.

It is understood the video was released on the day William and Kate’s children began their Easter school holidays to shield them from coverage of their mother’s health.

It comes after the mum-of-three has been missing from royal duties since she underwent a planned abdominal surgery on 17 January.

Her disappearance from public prompted rumours about her health, which were only compounded when she released a family picture to mark Mother’s Day, which she later apologised for ‘editing.’

It is not known how long Kate will be receiving treatment but it is understood she may be keen to attend events as and when she feels able to.

As the news of the princess’s diagnosis spread around the world, messages of support flooded in, with Rishi Sunak saying she has ‘the love and support of the whole country.’

Millions of households who claim Universal Credit are to see an increase to their payments within weeks

Households who currently get Universal Credit are to see an increase to their payments that’s set to come within weeks.

Those who claim the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) benefit – which is given out to low-income working and non-working households – will be hundreds of pounds better off a year come April.

And it’ll mean 5.5 million families across the UK are to reap the benefits.

  • Struggling families to get up to £812 cash boost to help towards household costs
  • Families struggling with bills to get £200 Cost of Living payment
  • Low-income families to get £100 supermarket vouchers to spend in Asda and Tesco
  • Exact amount benefits payments for parents will rise in 2024
  • ASK DANI: ‘Going behind his back and getting pregnant isn’t the answer’

£470 better off

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt announced there was to be a 6.7% increase for all benefits in his Autumn Statement in November last year – in line with the rate of inflation for September 2023.

The change, which comes in on 1 April 2024, means that families on Universal Credit will be almost £500 better off a year.

He said, at the time:

‘This will be anaverage increase of £470 for 5.5 million householdsnext year’.

The DWP has since confirmed: ‘In 2024/25, around 5.5 million Universal Credit families are forecast to benefit from uprating with an average annual gain for a family on Universal Credit estimated to be £470 (equivalent to an increase of around £39 per month), however gains will vary depending on the elements received by different family types.’

Why is this change being brought in?

The chancellor announced that all benefits – including Universal Credit, Child Benefit and the State Pension – will rise in line with inflation from the next tax year.

While Universal Credit is to rise by 6.7%, the state pension is to increase by the slightly higher amount of 8.5%, because of the Triple Lock Guarantee.

This guarantees a rise in the benefit for state pensioners in line with average earnings, inflation or 2.5% – whichever is highest.

Other benefits fall in line with theSeptember Consumer Price Index (CPI) – inflation based on the average prices paid by consumers for a representative basket of goods and services.

How much extra will I get?

Around 5.5 million families in the UK who claim Universal Credit will be £470 better off a year, or £39 better off a month.

However, some could get more cash in the bank than that, depending on their personal circ*mstances – with some families just over £900 better off a year.

Couples where one adult is aged 25+ and who have two children (born on or after April 6, 2017) will get an increase of £75.46 per month, or £905.52 per year – as their payments will rise from £1,117.98 per month to £1,193.44 per month, from April.

Here are the proposedUniversal Credit payments rises, in line with the 6.7% uplift:

  • Single under 25: payments will increase from£292.11to£311.68a month
  • Single 25 or over: from£368.74to£393.45a month
  • Joint claimants both under 25: from£458.51to£489.23a month
  • Joint claimants, one or both 25 or over: from£578.82to£617.60a month

Some people who claim Universal Credit will get extra payments due to varying circ*mstances. Here’s how that will change in April:

Child element

If you have kids, you will get extra money through Universal Credit.

  • If your first child was born before April 6, 2017, payments will rise from£315a month to£333.33a month
  • If your first child was born on or after April 6, 2017, or your second child and subsequent children, it will rise from£269.58a month to£287.92.
  • The disabled child element lower rate of Universal Credit will rise from£146.31a month to£156.11.
  • The higher rate of the disabled child rate will rise from£456.89to£487.58a month

Limited capability for work

  • Limited capability for work: payments will rise from£146.31a month to£156.11.
  • Limited capability for work or work-related activity from£390.06to£416.19.

Carer element

If you get the carer element of Universal Credit it will rise from£185.86a month to£198.31.

Work allowance

  • Higher work allowance (no housing amount) will rise from£631a month to£673.
  • The lower work allowance (with housing amount) will rise from£379a month to£404.

Childcare costs element

  • This will increase for one child only from£950.92a month to£1,014.63.
  • Or for two or more children, the increase will be from£1,630.15a month to£1,739.37.

What is Universal Credit?

Universal Credit is an all-in-one benefit for low-income, unemployed and working families that comes in the form of a single monthly payment to help with living costs.

You may be able to get it if you’re on a low income, out of work or you cannot work.

Universal Credit replaces older-style, or legacy benefits, including:

  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Income Support
  • Child Tax Credit
  • Working Tax Credit
  • Housing Benefit

Who is eligible for Universal Credit?

You may be able to get Universal Credit if you’re on a low income or need help with your living costs.

According to the Government, you could be:

  • out of work
  • working (including self-employed or part time)
  • unable to work, for example because of a health condition

To claim the benefit, you must:

  • live in the UK
  • be aged 18 or over (there are some exceptions if you’re 16 to 17)
  • be underState Pension age
  • have £16,000 or less in money, savings and investments

Other benefits set to increase

As well as Universal Credit, Child Benefit will also be increasing in April.

This will rise from £24 to £25.60 per weekfor the first child, meaningparents of one child will get an extra £83.20 per year.

For second children onwards, you currently receive £15.90 per child. Thiswill be increased to £16.95 per additional child, per week.

Parents of two children will get an extra £137.80 per year.

And those receiving Housing Benefit will also see a rise in their payments, but how much it’ll go up by depends on your circ*mstances.

If you are a single-person claimant:

  • Aged under 25, it will increase from £67.20 to £71.70
  • For any age on main phase ESA, the increase is expected to go from £84.80 to £90.50
  • If you’re aged between 25 and state pension credit age, the amount is expected to increase from £84.80 to £90.50
  • For those of pension age, the amount is expected to increase from £217 to £235.20

For single parents

  • If you’re under 18, the benefit will increase from £67.20 to £71.70
  • If you’re any age claiming main phase ESA, the payment will go from £84.80 to £90.50
  • If you’re between 18 and state pension credit age, it will increase from £84.80 to £90.50
  • For those who have reached state pension, the rate is expected to increase from £217 to £235.20

If you’re in a couple

  • If both are under 18, the amount will increase from £101.50 to £108.30
  • If one or both are between 18 and state pension credit age, the rate will increase from £133.30 to £142.25
  • For any age claiming main phase ESA, the rate will increase from £133.30 to £142.25
  • If one or both have reached pension age, it will increase from £324.70 to £352

If you have a child or other dependent, the rate is expected to increase from £77.78 to £83.24.
