Sweet Potato Fries Air Fryer:
Crispy exterior, soft and pillowy interior, perfectly seasoned sweet potato fries! These crispy sweet potato fries are made in the air-fryer, and only use a small amount of oil.
Sweet potato fries made in the air fryer are a great, healthy alternative to deep fried fries. The small amount of oil means less fat and calories, without sacrificing flavor. And the air fryer means crispy, tasty, fries, within minutes if your not a fan of sweet potato’s tryAir Fryer Fries.
Sweet potatoes are so versatile you can mash them and make a sweet potato casserole, scallop them, make a pie, or air fry. If you don’t have an air fryer, don’t stress, I have included oven instructions as well.
Raise your hands if you love fries? Oh man, both hands up over here. But I can be a little picky when it comes to my fries. I like a crispy exterior, soft interior, and if I can get them with less oil, then hallelujah. I mean, I want to be so into healthy eating and everything, but I am more of a moderation in all things kind of girl.
And I do love my fries. That is one of the top reasons I am currently crushing on all things air fryer.
How does an air fryer work?
The air fryer is super awesome because it gives you the consistency and texture of fried food, with that crispy crunch we all love and find so satisfying, but without all the extra oil.
How? It uses air and convection technology to circulate that air and evaporate the moisture off the exterior of your food to give it a crispy crunch.
It is actually pretty awesome. And I have made everything from breakfast eggs to stuffed chicken in mine. If you don’t have one, I suggest checking them out: Amazon Air Fryers.
How do you make sweet potato fries crispy?
When it comes to fries, I love them crispy. The trick is in the size of the fry, the amount of oil used, the space between fries, and the cook time. So I am going to tell you what I have found to work the best in my air fryer, but you may want test and adjust for whatever air fryer you have.
1. Fry size: that 1 centimeter square size is great for fries, and great for getting a crispy exterior and the fries cooked through. 1/4th inch or so. Give or take!
2. Oil: I like to use just enough oil to give the exterior of the food a light coating, but not so much that you have oil in the bottom of your bowl. The oil helps with the frying, but it also helps the seasoning stick to the fries. You can make the sweet potato fries without oil, but they won’t be as crispy.
3. Space: In the air fryer, the fries won’t get crispy unless air can flow around them. The technology it uses to get that fried by air texture requires air flow. So, that is the down side, it will take a while or several batches if you are cooking for a crowd. But trust me, it is worth it to get that satisfying crisp exterior.
4. Time: In my air fryer it takes between 8-10 minutes to get a crispy exterior, depending on how exact I was in my cutting.
5. Flip half way through: Even though one of the perks of an air fryer is you don’t have to flip food to get it crispy, it does help with even cooking. So, flip part way through.
How do you make sweet potato fries in the oven?
Can we just agree that if you do not currently own an air fryer you need to get one right now!
Amazon Air Fryer options are aplenty, so go! I have a Gourmia Air Fryer, which you can get at Costco. It is 5 quarts. But the Phillips one is one of the top rated air fryers on the market.
However, if you do not have an air fryer, you can still make these tasty sweet potato fries in the oven.
The tips for getting great sweet potato fries in the oven are similar to those of cooking in the air fryer. You need space. You need a little oil. And you need to cut them into a uniform shape and size.
Are sweet potato fries better for you than french fries?
Ok, no matter how many times I post something with sweet potatoes, I get questions about whether or not sweet potatoes are better for you than regular old white potatoes. And the answer is yes. For the most part.
I am not a nutritionist. But here is what I know: Sweet potatoes are rich in vitamins C and B. They have potassium, which means they are great for avoiding things like leg aches. White potatoes are lower infatand sugar than sweet potatoes. But, sweet potatoes have fewer carbs andcalories. White potatoes contain more protein andfiber. So those looking for low carb and low calories diets, sweet potatoes are the winner. But honestly, both are fine as long as you aren’t loading them up with unhealthy things.
Sweet potato fries are my favorite snack, but they also make a great side dish. I love serving them with:
- Roasted chicken and brussels sprouts
- Instant pot french dip sandwiches
- Chicken club sandwiches
- Instant Pot Sloppy Joes

- 2 medium sweet potatoes peeled and sliced into fries

Peel and cut sweet potatoes into fries, approximately 1 cm square thickness.

I cooked mine on 400 for 10 minutes than flipped them for a few more minutes They were not crispy so I put them in longer, they got a bit dark and they still weren’t crispy. How come?

I am not sure. What kind of air fryer do you have? Did you use the oil when you tossed them? Depending on how thick they were cut they may need to cook longer to get crispy.

My air fryer manufacturer discourages the use of olive oil because it has such a low smoke point. Did you have a problem with smoke while you were cooking these?

I have not, but you can sub it out for a different oil such as canola if you would like.

The Ingredients call for 2 tsp. of olive oil, but the Instructions call for 1 TBSP of olive oil. Which measurement is correct? This looks like a really good recipe. This is for my grandson. He can't have much oil due to a stomach condition, so the 2 tsp. sounded about perfect for him, but not a full tablespoon.

You really don't need much, just enough to coat so the seasonings stick. You can even just spray them with cooking spray if that helps!
